FTSE CLOSE: Footsie posts modest gain as pound slips; unemployment falls again as wages edge up; Royal Mail delivers sales rise
The FTSE 100 closed up 25.88 points at 7626.33 and the pound was at $1.32 against the dollar.
Unemployment has fallen by 12,000 to 1.41 million meaning the jobless rate is just 4.2 per cent, the joint lowest for more than 30 years, according to the Office for National Statistics. Average earnings increased by 2.5 per cent in the year to May.
Royal Mail delivered a 2 per cent rise in overall sales in the last three months, as a decline in the number of letters being sent was partially offset by a surge in parcels.
And Telecoms group TalkTalk said last year’s company ‘reset’ is beginning to bear fruit, with sales surging 4.1 per cent in its first quarter.
